Stone Lane Gardens was founded by Kenneth Ashburner, a passionate plant collector and nurseryman who dedicated much of his life to assembling this unique botanical collection. Ashburner began planting the gardens in the 1980s, transforming a former neglected woodland into the captivating landscape seen today. His work in botany was primarily focused on birches and alders, leading to the development of an arboretum that is both scientifically valuable and visually stunning.
Following Kenneth’s passing, the garden has been maintained and further developed by the charitable trust that inherited his legacy. The trust continues to promote the conservation and study of these trees, ensuring the garden remains a thriving habitat and a source of inspiration.
While Stone Lane Gardens is a captivating destination on its own, the surrounding area offers additional attractions worth exploring:
– Castle Drogo: Just a short drive from Stone Lane Gardens, this impressive National Trust property, with its stunning architecture and beautifully restored interiors, provides both history and exceptional views over the Teign Gorge.
– Dartmoor National Park: Explore miles of rugged terrain, open moorlands, and spectacular granite tors. Perfect for hiking, picnicking, and wildlife watching, Dartmoor offers adventures for all ages.
– Chagford: A picturesque market town nearby, Chagford hosts charming shops, cosy cafes, and traditional inns providing a taste of local life and hospitality.
