Summer Jazz Weekend

Friday 30th June – 2nd July 2023

Amazingly, this is the 22nd consecutive Summer Jazz Weekend (can we say consecutive when we were forced to close for 1 year?) and again it is being hosted “Live at the Langstone” by Jeremy Huggett.

Jeremy presents the pick of the West Country Jazz scene for your entertainment over this value-packed weekend.

The Eagle Jazz Band founded in 1951 and is now one of the oldest formed bands in the UK, based in the Midlands. The Band sports a healthy combination of youth and experience, Pete Brown (trumpet cornet and valve trombone) and Brian Lawrence (Bass and Sousaphone) were both long serving members of the original Eagle Jazz Band. Matt Palmer (clarinet & saxes) joined in 2004. Drummer

Tim Jones has added vigour to the engine room to allow the band to fire on all cylinders as required, along with Brian Mellor (banjo and guitar) and Terry Williams (trombone, drums vibes).Their wide repertoire is drawn from popular songs from the 1920s, 30s, and 40s; Classic Jazz compositions by King Oliver, Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton Sydney Bechet and Duke Ellington plus New Orleans Marches, Rags, Stomps, Blues, Swing and instrumental features. All band members are multi-instrumentalists, enabling them to play a variety of different sounds and styles each played in a happy, entertaining manner, many featuring vocals.

Mike Denham (Piano), Trevor Whiting (Clarinet/ Saxophones), Ali Whiting (Vocals, Violin), Keith Hall (Guitar, Banjo, Vocals)

This is a very popular combination with a repertoire ranging from ragtime through to 1930s swing. Trevor Whiting is one of the UK’s most in-demand reed players.

Ali’s lovely vocals include numbers by ‘the Empress of the Blues’ Bessie Smith and ‘the Queen of Jazz’ Ella Fitzgerald

Jeremy’s early musical career saw him receive a number of awards – in 1989, he was nominated by musicians from the famous “Old Duke” in Bristol for a place at Johnny Dankworth’s Summer School (Wavendon).

In May 1992 he was invited to guest in concert at the Colston Hall in Bristol with the US 76th Army Band and in 1993 he won the award for Best Reed Player in the UK.

Since then, Jeremy’s gone from strength to strength, playing with famous names all over the country including Acker Bilk, Digby Fairweather, Cy Laurie, George Melly, Humphrey Lyttleton, Danny Moss, Pete Allen, Tommy Burton, Beryl Brydon, Enrico Tomasso, Jim Fryer, Roy Williams, and the list goes on.

Led by Jeremy on Saxophones, Clarinet & Vocals the Gatsby Gang features some of the UK’s top musicians and plays hot, swinging jazz from the Roaring 20s. The 1920s is renowned for being an era of prohibition, speakeasies, and mob violence – a period when the jitterbug was scandalous, flappers bobbed their hair & raised their skirts, and a good time was to be had by the reckless and young at heart. So, put on your best Gangster & Moll outfits and let the Gatsby Gang transport you back to the music that became the musical backdrop to the glitz & glamour of the Roaring 20s.

Returning to the Langstone Cliff Jazz Weekend after some years’ absence we thought it was time to bring back the band! Band of Gold is one of the UK’s top function and festival bands playing a mixture of mainstream and traditional jazz, lounge jazz, swing, bossa novas, blues and rock & roll.

Since its birth in 1997 the Band has been in great demand and has worked extensively at jazz

venues, weddings, private parties and corporate events throughout the UK and Europe. They have also appeared at all the major jazz festivals including Bude, Teignmouth, Birmingham, Keswick, Cork and the Old Duke Jazz Festival in Bristol. Spain and France. The band is led by Jeremy on Saxes and Vocals, James Clemas on Piano, Tony Mann on Double Bass and Mark Etherington on Drums.
