Nestled amid this region’s rolling landscape lies Compton Castle – a gem of medieval architecture that whispers tales of a bygone era. When you next stay at our wonderful Langstone Cliff Hotel, be sure to set aside a day to immerse yourself in the wonder of this enchanting fortified manor.
For more than six centuries, Compton Castle has stood resiliently, bearing witness to numerous historical events. It served as a homestead for the Gilbert family in the 14th century, the same family that includes the famed Sir Humphrey Gilbert – half-brother of Sir Walter Raleigh and a renowned explorer of his own right. The castle presents a striking blend of Gothic and Tudor architecture that echoes the passage of time.
Situated approximately 27 miles from Langstone Cliff Hotel, Compton Castle is easily accessible by car within an hour’s drive. A scenic route passing through quaint English villages and lush countryside awaits adventurous travellers, offering not just a delightful destination, but an enjoyable journey.
Compton Castle boasts stately medieval architecture, adorned with timeless ivy and nestled within beautiful orchards and gardens. Visitors can explore the Great Hall, featuring awe-inspiring high ceilings, classic woodwork and splendid Gothic windows. Wander through the breathtaking medieval garden, engulfed in the fragrant scent of old roses and herbs used in medieval times.
Compton Castle opens its doors to visitors from Saturday to Wednesday, 10am-5pm. Closed on Thursdays and Fridays, it’s always best to check the National Trust website for the most updated information before you plan your visit.

Knowledgeable National Trust tour guides will lead you through the castle, illuminating the stories behind its architecture, past inhabitants and treasures.
