There are few better ways to understand Devon’s rich past than by exploring its wealth of historic houses.
There are few better ways to understand Devon’s rich past than by exploring its wealth of historic houses. Nestled amongst the natural beauty of Dartmoor and the North Devon coast, Coombe Trenchard House and Gardens stands as a striking testament to Edwardian architecture, presenting a unique attraction for anyone staying at the Langstone Cliff Hotel.
Coombe Trenchard was designed and built for the Sperlings, wealthy Edwardian friends of Sabine Baring-Gould, in 1906. The house and garden lay untouched for years, teetering on the brink of irreversible dereliction until Sarah and Philip Marsh, who bought the dilapidated house in 2008, started the huge task of restoration, breathing new life into the Edwardian gem. The restoration process has revealed a wonderful example of Arts & Crafts style garden ‘rooms’, largely untouched and hidden beneath overgrown shrubbery and trees.
Coombe Trenchard House and Gardens is just over an hour’s drive from Langstone Cliff Hotel, covering approximately 40 miles. The journey takes you through beautiful Devon countryside, unveiling one stunning vista after another in what equals an inspiring road trip in itself.
There’s plenty to see and do at Coombe Trenchard House. Wander around the lovingly restored Edwardian house, soak up the delightful Arts and Crafts influences and marvel at the stunning views across the rolling Devon landscape. The house is filled with original Edwardian features and charming period furniture that transports visitors back in time.
Explore the twelve-acre garden, home to a broad selection of well-matured trees, vibrant flower beds and many hidden gems. Anyone with a penchant for gardening will find a visit to Coombe Trenchard to be a real delight.
Coombe Trenchard House and Gardens are open to visitors by appointment from May to September. For exact opening times, we recommend contacting the estate directly, as these can vary.
