Once again Denise and Tony Lawrence host this the fourteenth consecutive Summer Jazz Weekend here at the Langstone Cliff Hotel. The format has remained virtually unchanged since we started but the performers vary from year to year, Denise and Tony having the enviable knack of “Spotting the Good’uns”. Obviously, the most talented bands retain their popularity year after year and we will always welcome the best for return visits – and that looks to me if it is exactly what is happening for 2014. What a superb line-up!
The Denise Lawrence's West Country Jazz Featuring Ron Drake
Since forming her band in the early 80s, Denise Lawrence has
consistently attracted flattering reviews from both the world
of theatre and cabaret in addition to the jazz festival circuit. Her
trademark is her versatility as her crystal-clear vocals cover
a wide spectrum
of music with exceptional style as well as humour.
Denise’s stylish pianist, husband and musical director, Tony Lawrence, joins Andy Mayes (drums) and Colin Fulcher (bass) to complete her spectacular band. International clarinet and sax virtuoso Ron Drake joins them this weekend bringing his unique and fresh approach to all things jazzy!!.
THE MIKE COX NEW ORLEANS ALL STARS.
Mike Cox (banjo & vocals) spent many years in North America where he led the Grand Dominion Jazz Band. Since returning to the UK he has become a familiar figure on the festival and club scene with his Black Snake Jazz Band and his Fantabulous Sheepwash Playboys. His current band, the New Orleans All-Stars, is formed from seven like-minded musicians dedicated to this particular authentic genre of jazz and who, from their vast repertoire, produce that pulsating New Orleans rhythm so pleasing for the dancers. This will be the debut of this excellent new band at Langstone Cliff Hotel.
STEVE GRAHAM’S RIVERBOAT FOUR.
During Saturday lunchtime you will be treated to the exceptional trumpet playing of Steve Graham. Steve’s trumpet style has been described as “always expressive” and ranging from the ‘hot and dirty’ to the ‘refined and melodic’. He is joined by three brilliant ‘sidemen’ including the very talented Mike Denham on piano. This splendid jazz ensemble provide the perfect accompaniment for the famous Langstone Cliff Country Buffet lunch on Saturday.
THE DART VALLEY STOMPERS.
Following a storming session here two years ago, the Dart Valley
Stompers are returning to Langstone Cliff by public demand
having wowed audiences all over the UK and abroad since their formation back in 2005. They are frequent visitors to all the major jazz clubs and festivals and play an exciting blend of New Orleans and Traditional jazz to a very high standard. They are led in fine style by the masterly reed playing of Jeremy Huggett who has taken the band to their current position as one of the
top traditional jazz attractions in the country.
