Yet again we invite Denise and Tony Lawrence to host this their
thirteenth consecutive Jazz Weekend here at the Langstone Cliff Hotel. The
format has remained virtually unchanged since 2001 but of course the performers
vary from year to year, Denise and Tony having the enviable knack of "Spotting
the Good'uns". Obviously, the most talented bands retain their popularity year
after year and we will always welcome the best for return visits – and that
looks to me if it is exactly what is happening for 2013. What a superb
line-up!
The Denise Lawrence's West Country Jazz Featuring Ron Drake
The crystal-clear voice of Denise Lawrence has been much enjoyed over the years by regulars to Langstone Cliff Hotel jazz weekends. The same can be said for the very fine piano playing of husband, Tony. This unique couple will entertain you early each evening.
On stage with them for the Sunday lunchtime finale this year will be ace drummer, Andy Mayes together with the swinging bass of Colin Fulcher. International clarinet and sax virtuoso Ron Drake will also be joining Denise and the 'boys' adding his special touch of brilliance to proceedings.
The Sunset Cafe Stompers
Purveyors of exciting traditional jazz in the New Orleans idiom, the 'Stompers" name derives from Al Capone's Chicago night-club where Louis Armstrong once played. Their distinctive and authentic seven-piece line-up of musicians has entertained throughout the UK and has established an enviable national reputation in the process. Expect some truly top-class jazz from Jelly Roll Morton to Duke Ellington to get your weekend underway in fine style
Jeremy Huggett's Harlem 4
Playing a wide range of Traditional jazz, Swing and Blues from the 30s and 40s, this is a small group that is 'ahead of the competition'. The band is led by the talented clarinet and sax playing of Jeremy Huggett. With four particularly versatile musicians, the Harlem 4 are able to select from a wide range of material ideally suited to the magnificent Langstone Cliff Saturday 'Country Buffet' lunch in the Lincoln restaurant. Don't forget to leave room for the sweets and coffee!!
The West Country All-Stars With Roger Marks And Pete Allen
The counties of Somerset, Devon and Cornwall are indeed fortunate to be home to some of this country's finest Traditional jazz musicians. Some of the 'cream' of these players have come together to form a jazz 'super-group' which features, amongst others, the superb and tasteful trombone playing of Roger Marks, alongside Britain's most exciting clarinet player, Pete Allen. However, every member of this band is a star in his own right and Saturday night's 'Jazz Band Ball' should be one to remember!!
