| Home | Summer Jazz Weekend
|
It could be said that we are quietly pleased at
the reception of our annual Jazz Weekend. On the
other hand it could also be said that we are chuffed
to bits with the high quality of the music and musicians
that Denise and Tony Lawrence have assembled for
us, year on year since 2001 – and the package
they have brought together for next July will certainly
mean that the Summer Jazz Weekend for 2008 is going
to be every bit as exiting.
Those of you that are already Jazz aficionados will know
every name in the programme – for those of
you that are not so familiar with the genre, be assured
we are bringing you some of the very best. Bound
to be a great weekend.

Having just celebrated 21 years on the British Jazz `circuit',
The Denise Lawrence Band has consistently entertained jazz
audiences to the highest possible standards. Their CDs
have attracted rave reviews both here and in the States
and they have played in the most prestigious venues from
the Royal Festival Hall to Worcester Cathedral. With tours
on the finest cruise liners and appearances at many other
international events, they have taken their music throughout
Europe to Asia and America - and yet, through all this,
they have kept their feet firmly on the ground playing
just where they like to - and not where they don't!! Denise's
wonderful singing and quick fire sense of humour has endeared
her to audiences everywhere and, of course, she has the
advantage of being backed by some top class musicians including
her musical director and husband, pianist Tony Lawrence.
Guesting with Denise this weekend is the sensational clarinet,
sax, and flute player, John Hallam. Rated by some as the
greatest reed player on the UK jazz scene, John is a quite
awesome musical talent. He recorded a CD with The Denise
Lawrence Band a couple of years ago and this has proved
to be a huge success producing demands from promoters for
more and more dates with this combination. If you have
not seen John before, prepare to be amazed!! Langstone
Cliff Hotel is proud to have been able to get John and
Denise together throughout our 2006 jazz weekend.

Originally conceived by Keith Hockin, an antique dealer
- hence the name!! - this band have been taking the jazz
world by storm over the last few years. With a non-stop
schedule of bookings throughout the UK and abroad the band
have now established themselves as one of the most popular
and professional bands at jazz clubs and festivals everywhere.
Playing their exciting brand of vintage jazz in the classic
tradition, The Antique Six were voted `band of the year'
by the Stafford Jazz Society and were also winners of the
Ken Rattenbury Memorial Trophy.
Needing no introduction to those who have visited us before,
Des' band play a unique blend of music from the roaring
twenties. Join them for a spellbinding journey through
the sounds, the spectacle and the nostalgia, of jazz's
greatest era. With a repertoire ranging from the downright
obscure to the greatest melodies ever composed, this band
treat every tune with loving care and bestow upon it their
own superb musical arrangement. A rare lunchtime treat
on Saturday!!
In 1962, the Band was chosen to accompany
the last Louis Armstrong tour to this country. Gerry has
remained since that time as one of our very finest trumpet
plyers and his current band is rated by many as the greatest
traditional jazz band playing in the UK today. With his splendid
singing and wicked sense of humour Gerry always ensures that
entertainment is high on the menu.
There could be no better band than John
Shillito's Select Six to burden with the responsibility of
bringing our wonderful weekend of jazz to a memorable conclusion.
The band members are chosen from among the very greatest
players of the early jazz styles in Britain today. John Shillito
himself is fine trumpet player and a bandleader of almost
forty years experience. Many will remember John when he took
over the trumpet chair from Ken Colyer with the band becoming
`John Bastable's Chosen Six'. Fronted by John's great musical
skill and poise, to say nothing of his excellent vocals,
this band have that `little bit extra' flair and sparkle.
